Palio dei Normanni Piazza Armerina — History & Program | Al Borghetto

The Palio dei Normanni is Piazza Armerina's most important historical event and one of Sicily's most spectacular medieval reenactments. It's celebrated every year from August 12 to 14, attracting thousands of visitors from across the island and beyond.
The History
The Palio commemorates the liberation of the city from Saracen occupation by the Norman count Roger of Hauteville in 1061. According to legend, the victory was made possible by the miraculous appearance of a banner bearing the image of the Madonna delle Vittorie.
The Program
August 12 — The Count's Entry
An impressive historical parade with hundreds of participants in medieval costume processes through the streets of the historic center. Count Roger enters the city on horseback, welcomed by the cheering crowd.
August 13 — The Quintana
The four historic quarters (Monte, Castellina, Canali, and Casalotto) compete in equestrian skill games. Armored knights compete in the traditional quintana, attempting to strike the target at full gallop.
August 14 — The Palio
The final day with the grand tournament finale. The winning quarter receives the Palio, the prestigious painted banner. The festival concludes with fireworks and feasts in the piazza.
